IBM now ranks No. 3 worldwide among suppliers of external disk-storage systems. It had a 13.5% share and $471 million in sales in the third quarter, according to market researcher IDC. EMC (EMC ) is No. 1 with a 20.7% share, followed by Hewlett-Packard's (HPQ ) 18.2%. EMC has been growing much faster than IBM -- at 19.5% in the past four quarters, compared to 4.7% for IBM. But Nancy Hurley, senior analyst for Enterprise Strategy Group, says Big Blue's new offering "makes them much more competitive against EMC. There's a strong possibility they can start taking a lot of market share with these products."
